Staying safe while you're driving over the holidays

The holiday season is here, which means you may be planning on hopping in the car with your family and heading to see loved ones at some point over the next few weeks. It is common for people to travel more during this time of year, which means you could be sharing the road in Delaware with a lot of people at one time. It is especially important for you to remain vigilant and stay safe.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year. According to the National Safety Council, it is also a time when many fatal and serious car accidents will occur, largely due to the number of people traveling and drunk driving. While you cannot control the actions of others, you can take steps to protect your own personal safety. You can also learn more about what you can do in the event you are in an accident caused by a reckless or negligent driver.

Why is Thanksgiving so dangerous?

One of the main reasons why the Thanksgiving holidays are dangerous for travelers is because there are simply more people on the road at the same time. Schools are out, people are off work and many have travel plans. The National Safety Council estimates that as many as 400 people could die in traffic accidents just during the Thanksgiving holiday.

In addition to the possible fatalities, the NSC also estimates that as many as 47,500 people could suffer serious injuries in car accidents during this time. Another reason for the increased risk of an accident is the fact that people tend to drink more over the holidays. Naturally, this leads to an increased likelihood that drunk drivers will be on the road.

What can you do?

The NSC says around 35% of all traffic accidents that take place during the Thanksgiving holidays involve a driver who was under the influence of alcohol. While you cannot control the actions of others, you can look for signs of drunk driving. This can help you avoid a collision and possibly report the dangerous action.

If a reckless or negligent driver does cause you harm, you have options. You have the right to pursue recovery and compensation through a personal injury claim. It is possible to hold liable parties accountable for their actions and secure what you need to get better and move forward after a car accident.
